Adhesives and Sealants protective products

Adhesives and sealants are essential products in many industries. Their applications range from paper, packaging, wood and flooring adhesives to wind power and the automotive sector. When adhesives and sealants are used in outdoor environments, the effects of light can have adverse effects on both appearance and performance of the joint. For example, UV absorbers filter harmful UV light and helps prevent color change and delamination of coatings, adhesives and sealants.

UV Degradation

Degradation of UV light usually leads to one or both discoloration and reduction in strength and physical properties. Stabilizing additives such as Antioxidants, UV absorbers and Light Stabilizers contribute to create durable adhesives and sealants. This extends the service life of high-quality products and make an important contribution to sustainable products development.

Stabilizing additives

Additives for adhesives and sealants are mainly based on various petrochemical raw materials. However, this can also come from biobased sources such as Natural Rubber Latex. Natural rubber latex based adhesives are generally sold as solutions in a tackifier resin.

Antioxidants prevent thermally induced degradation of polymers in adhesives, sealants, and coatings during processing and under end-use conditions. Common used antioxidants are Omnistab AN 1010 & Omnistab AN 1076 with recommend dosage of 0.1 – 0.5%.

UV absorbers and Light Stabilizers protect against loss of mechanical properties and prevent color change. UV Absorbers will convert the absorber energy into harmless heat. Usually benzophenone UV absorbers to high-performing benzotriazoles will be used. Light stabilizers primarily acts on the oxygen exposed surface of an adhesive or sealant. The stabilization process provides long term protection and durability.

Protection against discoloration and long-term retention of adhesive properties are important requirements for most adhesive and sealant applications. In short, additives are important in the formulation of adhesives and sealants designed to be exposed to daylight.
