Antioxidant for long-term thermal stabilization

Looking for an antioxidant for long-term thermal stabilization? You probably need an asymmetric hindered phenol antioxidant that is resistant to color degeneration. For instance, our Omnistab AN 245. Symmetric vs. Asymmetric
Compared with symmetrically hindered phenols, the structural characteristics of asymmetrically hindered phenols reflected in the changes of two substituents on the ortho-position of phenolic hydroxyl group. In the traditional structure of hindered phenol antioxidant, R1 and R2 substituents are both tert-butyl. This is a completely hindered phenol or symmetrically blocked phenol antioxidant. Therefore, the ortho-position of hydroxyl group in asymmetric hindered phenol antioxidant are two different substituents. For example with our Omnistab AN 245 (R1 is a tert-butyl group, R2 is a methyl group).
The key to phenol’s antioxidant effect lies in the activity of the hydroxyl group it contains. The reactivity of hydroxyl groups and free radicals influence the steric hindrance of ortho-alkyl R1 and R2. Above all, the asymmetrical shape of the Omnistab AN 245 reduces steric hindrance to a certain extent. The conjugate system formed by oxygen radical and benzene ring can exist stably. So the reaction activity of hydroxyl group improves. It is easy to provide active hydrogen atom to bind peroxy radical. The free radicals formed by phenol itself have low activity and high stability. Thus, the speed of antioxidant reaction accelerate and the efficiency of thermal oxygen stabilization improves.
The discoloration of plastic products are the problems that many manufacturers pay close attention to. And discoloration of the products is closely related to the heat, oxygen and color degeneration resistance of the base material and the antioxidant. The reduction of the steric hindrance effect of the asymmetrically hindered phenol antioxidant (Omnistab AN 245) makes it easy to replace the nitro group in the ortho-position.
