Evaluation of new light stabilizers

Choosing your product among all available light stabilizers in the market is challenging. Based on the polymer type, processing equipment and technology the choice differs. Additionally, it needs to be taken into account a variety of other chemical additives used in production affects the choice.
How to find out?
We help you make the right choice! We look at the selection of light stabilizers for industrial use and the selection is based on the following principles; Compatibility, Mobility, Stability, Process ability and Environmental friendly (Read more in our previous insight: principles of Light stabilizers).
- Compatibility refers to the ability that each component of the blend matches. In addition, it could form macroscopic uniform materials. Good compatibility means that additives can stably and evenly appear in the system for a long time.
- Mobility refers to the oxidation reaction. For example, the oxidation reaction mainly occurs on the surface of the plastic products, especially opaque products with a relatively small surface area to volume ratio, which requires the light stabilizer to continuously migrates from the inside to the surface of the product.
- The light stabilizer must remain stable in the plastic material. In other words, under processing with high temperatures there should be little volatile loss. Moreover, no color change should take place. And perhaps the most important; it must not react with other additives or components.
- The process ability of the light stabilizers affects the melt viscosity and screw torque of resin. The solution is to add the light stabilizer in a masterbatch with a certain concentration, and then mix with resin to process the product to avoid uneven distribution of the light stabilizer in the product.
- Environmental friendly is a hot topic; the light stabilizer must be low toxic and dust free is often requested. Especially no harmful effects on human body during processing or no harm to animals and plants is what we pay attention to.
Omnistab developments
The molecular weight of Hindered Amine Light Stabilizers tends to increase gradually. With this information our R&D Center has developed the Omnistab LS 2020, the Omnistab LS 3346 and the Omnistab LS 5050H. These new light stabilizers all have the advantage of being resistant to extraction, volatilization and precipitation.
With it’s ultra-low molecular weight distribution to ensure the quality and stability, Omnistab LS 2020 occupies part of the market with FDA approval to meet your environmental goals. On the other hand, the Omnistab LS 3346 takes a different place with the characteristics without color pollution and high weather resistance. Also FDA approved and widely used in thermoplastics such as PP, PE and PUR. The latest development is the Omnistab LS 5050H, which is widely used in polyolefin, PVC, PA, TPU, ABS and PET.
