“Gorgeous modification” of Benzotriazole UV absorber

Omnistab UV 360 is a very efficient benzotriazole UV absorber. It has good UV absorption in the range of 280-380nm. Other advantages are high melting point, low toxicity, oil resistance and color fastness. Above all, low volatility. And all this with a small adjustment; it is a modification of benzotriazole UV absorber 329.

Background

Plastic processing usually involves working at high temperatures (200-300℃). Usually benzotriazole UV absorbers have a relatively low molecular weight. Thus, it is easy to reduce its protective effect due to surface migration and volatilization during polymer processing. On the one hand, this pollutes the environment and affects the health of the operators. On the other hand, it also increases costs. Therefore, it is of practical & economic importance to investigate the synthesis of dipolybenzotriazole UV absorber with high molecular weight and volatile resistance.

Modification

Omnistab UV 360 is a dipoly benzotriazole by a modification of benzotriazole UV absorber 329. In short, see the change of the molecular structure.

Two molecules of UV 329 reacted with formaldehyde and secondary amine under the catalytic action of a base to obtain Omnistab UV 360. We call this reaction the Mannich reaction. At 200℃, the TGA of UV 360 is 0.5% and at 300℃ it is 1.8%. In the range of 200-300℃, UV 360 has almost no thermal weight loss. UV360 has better light stability and thermal stability with the increase of molecular weight. The absorbency does not decrease even with prolonged exposure to sunlight. Performance is not affected by heat during processing and use. Two strong absorption peaks in the ultraviolet region of 270-400nm . To clarify, the two maximum absorption peaks are 306nm and 347nm. At the same time, UV 360 is a UV absorber with excellent performance. Which has an excellent transmittance in the visible light region (>400nm).

Applications

Omnistab UV 360 is widely used in various polymers and resins. For example, acrylic & acetal resin, PET, PC, PA, PE, PP, PS and PPE. It is particularly applicable to the processing and aging conditions. Which have a high concentration and require low volatile and good compatibility. This product is used alone or in combination with antioxidants, other UV absorbers, light stabilizers and other functional additives.
