Liquid Benzotriazole UV absorbers
Liquid Benzotriazole UV absorbers solve the challenges of high-end coatings. Under outdoor conditions, some coatings undergo slight aging after prolonged exposure to sunlight over a period of several months or years.
What problems will occur in coatings without added UV absobers?
Without added UV absorbers problems occur such as loss of gloss, color fading, scaling, cracking and even peeling of the entire coating. This seriously undermines the decorative and protective effect of the coating on the substrate. Not only the economy suffered a great loss, resulting in a waste of resources. Also the aging degradation of resin causes some pollution. The underlying problem is the lack of or incorrectly selected UV absorbers added to the coating.
Why does UV aging occur in coatings?
Aging of coating resins usually occurs under the influence of a combination of environmental factors, such as light, heat, water, oxygen and inorganic salts. All of these factors contribute to the degradation of the resin. However, among them, UV radiation from the sun is the main factor leading to polymer degradation. UV radiation causes degradation reactions on the exposed coating film resulting in loss of gloss, discoloration, calcification, flaking of the coating, etc.
How to solve the problem of UV aging of coatings and obtain high quality coatings?
Preventing photodegradation of coating resin caused by UV light is key to improving UV aging resistance. Choosing a suitable UV absorber is the most convenient and economical way to avoid coatings. Adding UV absorbers to the coating can effectively inhibit or reduce the photo-oxidation reaction of the resin, greatly improving the weather resistance of the coating, delaying UV aging and extending its service life.
UV absorber for coatings should have the following characteristics:
- Wide absorption range at UV wavelengths of 290-400nm
- Good light stability, even under long-term exposure to sunlight, its absorption capacity is almost not reduced
- Good thermal stability, no property reduction due to heat during processing and use
- Good compatibility with resin, no exudation during use
- Low toxicity, low volatility
Currently, benzotriazole UV absorbers are the most widely used UV absorbers in the coating industry thanks to its wide UV absorption range and good compatibility.
Omnistab Liquid benzotriazole UV absorbers
Omnistab UV 1130 for automotive and industrial coatings with high weather resistance requirements. It is easy to emulsify and suitable for both water-based and solvent-based systems.
Omnistab UV 384-2 for high performance coatings that meet the durability requirements of automotive coatings and achieve the quality required for premium topcoats. It provides effective protection for both primers and wood or plastic coatings. In addition, it has excellent heat resistance, making it particularly suitable for coatings subjected to long baking times and extreme external conditions. UV 384-2 is mainly used in solvent based coatings.
Omnistab UV 571 is used for polyurethane coating, which effectively improve the yellowing resistance level of coating.
All of the above UV absorbers are liquid and when used in combination with HALS (such as Omnistab LS 292 & LS 123), these synergistic combinations provide superior protection against gloss reduction, cracking, blistering and discoloration.
