Omnistab series for automotive coatings

Automotive coating is one of the fastest developing coatings worldwide. New products are usually better in quality and performance. And in our portfolio, we have specific Omnistab ranges for automotive coatings available to extend the lifetime of your coating. In this article we will introduce our additives, but let’s start with an overview of the requirements and different types of automotive coatings.

Switch from solvent to water-based

Automotive coating is the type of coating with the highest performance requirements. The traditional automotive coating is mainly based on solvents and the VOC emission is higher than 120 g / m2. Among them, due to the low solids content of metal flash paint, VOC emissions account for 66% of the total coating, up to 230 g / m2. This not only wastes resources, but also pollutes the environment and at the same time creates a fire hazard.

The waterborne automotive coatings utilize new technology. They promote the use of green and environmentally friendly coating products. For example, by reducing VOC emissions from the coating, promote the advancement of coating technology and product replacement. Water-based coating solution is one of the important emission reduction measures in the coating industry. Above all, it reduces constructor exposure to toxic and harmful volatile organic compounds. In 2019, water-based coatings for passenger cars in China reached 84%. An increase of 19% compared to 65% in 2015.

Advantages

  • Water-based coatings use water as a dispersant. There is only a small amount of low-toxic alcohol ether organic solvent. This is safe and environmental protection, saves resources, eliminates the risk of fire in construction. And lastly, it is beneficial to reduce air pollution.
  • They have good adaptability to material surface. They can also be made in wet environment and coating adhesion is strong.
  • The containers and tools can be cleaned with water. The unused coatings can be stored in a cool place, which not only saves paint resources, but also reduces the consumption of solvents.
  • Water-based coating electrophoresis film uniform, good smoothing, small gaps and corners can be coated with a certain thickness of the film, simple construction, good protection performance.

Types of automotive coatings

Primer coating – The main function of automotive primer is corrosion resistance. It is the easiest part to realize on a water basis. It is also the fastest part in waterborne process. Currently, the waterborne coatings used in automotive primers are electrophoretic primers. In addition, some cars use waterborne acrylic and epoxy ester dip coating paint.

Floating coating – It’s different from the primer coating. Firstly, it has excellent impact resistance and filling performance, which can not only handle the impact of the crushed stone on the surface, but also fill the electrophoretic surface. Secondly, it has a certain insulating ability for the ambient temperature of the harsh winter and hot summer outside the car body, and can better protect the electrophoretic paint. The main components of floating coating are: hydroxyl polyester or polyurethane hydrate as base material, closed isocyanate as crosslinking agent, which can maintain good mechanical properties of medium coating, such as stone chip resistance.

Finish coating – This includes monochrome paint, metallic paint. The role of monochrome paint is to resist UV radiation. The metallic paint brings more visual colors and has a decorative effect.

Repair coatings – Last but not least, the repair coatings. The proliferation of water-based coatings for car repairs is on the rise.

Additives for automotive coating

To conclude, waterborne coatings and the automotive industry are on the rise. A number of Omnistab additives can be used in water-based coatings to reduce UV damage. For example, UV 1130, UV 400, UV384-2, LS 292 and LS 123. The additives play a good protective role in water-based coatings. Such additives are low in alkaline, easy to emulsify, can be well dispersed in water-based coatings. To sum up, they can provide comprehensive protection for water-based coatings and reduce the chemical reaction of UV radiation on the coating surface. It can prevent the occurrence of light color loss, color change, paint peeling and other phenomena.

In addition, for different product applications, we will recommend 2-3 additive products used together to achieve better protection effect. For example, UV 400 and LS 292 / LS 123 can greatly improve the performance of the product. This synergistic effect can improve the varnish gloss reduction, cracks and bubbles, paint removal discoloration and other problems.
