Solution to aging of Photovoltaic (PV)
Global energy is accelerating the transition to an efficient, clean and sustainable direction. The development of clean energy is also an important factor affecting the global economy and environment. Solar photovoltaic has the advantages of low carbon, environmental protection and high efficiency. In this article we will help to find the right solution to aging of Photovoltaic (PV) materials.
Applications of polymers in photovoltaic field
In the photovoltaic field, polymers are mainly applied in encapsulation materials (also known as PV film) and PV cable.
Photovoltaic encapsulation materials include EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer), POE (polyolefin), PVB (polyvinyl butyral) encapsulation film. These encapsulation film is placed in the glass and solar cells or backing layer of photovoltaic modules to encapsulate and protect solar cells and insulate them from air.
Photovoltaic cables are a class of specialty cables in PV systems (or solar systems). It has excellent weather, temperature and abrasion resistance, as well as exceptional service life. Cross-linked polyolefin is excellent as insulation and sheathing material for PV cables.
Photovoltaic material aging factors
Since the PV material is simultaneously affected by light, heat, oxygen and moisture, the aging is caused by two factors: photo-oxidative aging and thermal-oxidative aging.
For example, the aging reaction of EVA PV glue contains two stages. The side chain of the acetic acid functional group deacetylation reaction. Which generates the carbonyl functional group, this color group led to EVA yellowing. In the deacetylation reaction, the product will generate acetic acid molecules, acetic acid will further erode the solar panels. Catalyzing the aging of EVA resulting in a decrease in photovoltaic cell efficiency, deterioration of stability, to failure.
Solutions to improve the resistance of photovoltaic material
For common cable materials, the addition of Omnistab UV P, UV 326, UV BP 3, UV BP 12 and other conventional UV absorbers, and formulated with hindered phenolic antioxidants (such as Omnistab AN 1010), can meet most customer requirements and testing standards.
However, the use environment of solar energy systems is often very harsh. PV materials expose to sunlight, high temperature, high humidity and dust for a long time. To ensure the efficient operation of solar systems, PV materials usually need to have a service life of 20-30 years. It needs higher demands on UV resistance and weather resistance. So, how can we improve the weather resistance of PV materials?
UV absorbers
Omnistab UV 312 is an oxalylaniline UV absorber with excellent migration resistance and thermal stability. It has good compatibility with photovoltaic materials. In addition, UV 312 absorbs efficiently in the 275-340 nm band. Which is the most sensitive band for C-C and C-H bonds in most photovoltaic materials. So UV 312 helps block the occurrence of photoaging. Furthermore, UV 312 has low color quality and high light transmission in the visible band. This will greatly reduce the loss of sunlight generated when passing through the adhesive film and prevent the decrease in light quantity. Improving the overall efficiency of photovoltaic devices.
Hindered Amine Light Stabilizers (HALS)
Omnistab LS 944 and Omnistab LS B 783 are very common light stabilizers in the photovoltaic field. Especially in combination with UV 312, is has synergistic effect on your product.
Anti oxidant
Omnistab AN 80 is a high molecular weight asymmetric hindered phenolic antioxidant for polyolefins and most elastomers. It has low volatility and excellent resistance to NOx staining. AN 80 has excellent extraction and migration resistance in photovoltaic materials, which contributes to the long-term effect of anti-aging and extends service life. In addition, the effect of Omnistab AN 80 in combination with thioester auxiliary antioxidants is superior to that of conventional hindered phenol (AN 1010) in combination with thioester.
