What do you know about Powder coating?
What is powder coating? It is quite simple, but we would like to explain it briefly. Powder coating is a coating that does not contain an organic solvent. But it exists in powder form and forms a coating. The coating is made of special resin, pigment, hardener and other additives. It’s mixed in certain ratio, then prepared by hot extrusion and crushing process.
You can store powder coatings stably at room temperature. This follows after electrostatic spraying, friction spraying (thermosetting method) or fluid bed dip coating (thermoplastic method). Other than liquid coatings or liquid paints, that needs to be applied with brush or roller. Secondly, heated, baked in an oven, melted and solidified. A smooth and clear permanent film forms to achieve the purpose of decoration and corrosion prevention. It has the advantages of no solvent and no pollution. And it will provide environmental protection and recovery, good adhesion and high mechanical strength of the coating film. As a result, it broadens in many application areas in the machine industry.
Powder coating applications
Powder coatings are winning market share with a number of examples:
Automotive Industry: For coating car engines, chassis, (metallic) wheels, filters, joystick, reflector, wiper and horn parts. The main variants are epoxy powder, polyester and acrylic paint system. It has excellent effect on the quality of the surface and reduces the chance of getting scratches.
Home Appliance Industry: Powder coatings in the production process of objects as refrigerators, air conditioners, washing machines and small household appliances. At present, epoxy polyester powder coatings with epoxy resin and polyester resin as the main film-forming substances are widely used in household appliances. For example, front and side plates of stoves and refrigerators, top and lids of washing machines, air-conditioning, water heaters, freezers and components of microwave ovens.
Metal building materials industry: In aluminum building materials coating, the representative powder coatings varieties are epoxy resin, polyester resin and acrylic powder coatings.
Additives to protect against UV light
In the future development of powder coatings, the addition of UV absorbers and other modifying agents are necessary. UV light can affect the characteristics of powder coatings. By adding additives, this will further improve weather resistance and UV resistance to ensure that it remains aesthetic and decorative and meets the high standards. In other words, applying this treatment will extend the service lifetime of a product. Omnistab UV 928 or UV 1577 are UV absorbers suitable for powder coatings, paints and continuous coatings on rolls. For example, the UV 1577 is a high end triazine absorber and has a broad absorption band. Especially suitable for high performance coatings. And the UV 928 has a high solubility in most organic solvents and is also suitable for other eco-friendly UV powder coatings. Sometimes one of the following additives can work as an alternative. UV Powder is a powder that does not contain an organic solvent. But it exists in powder form and forms a coating. The UV powder coatings are very popular for high end applications.
A normal clear powder is not UV resistant, but will protect the surface because of an extra layer. However, by adding protective additives to the powder coating itself, you don’t necessarily need an extra layer for protection. This process forms UV cured powder coating.
The main advantage of powder coating above wet paint is it is more resistant against scratching and chipping. It is also easier to apply much thicker layers. It is also more environmentally friendly because it is solvent free.
